Parisian bike hiring /sharing scheme - aka 'Velib'  ( Velo / Liberte) was launched in 2007. 
With earlier launches reputed to go as far back as 1965 elsewhere, bike hiring schemes are now a global phenomena eg. many cities throughout Europe, China, USA & Canada
